Writing android applications?

I have been making applications with google app inventor lately, and there is just too many limitations to the software, and I want something more challenging. I have eclipse , set up for writing the applications but i don't know what i would use to deign the applications. Would it just be JavaScript for the functions of the applications and CSS for the design?
